Maserati Levante GTS Spied Cold Weather Testing

Performance SUVs are increasing in popularity with automakers like Alfa Romeo and even Lamborghini coming-out with their own vehicle to fill this segment. Not to be outdone by the Stelvio QV and Urus, Maserati is coming out with their own performance variant of the outgoing Levante.

Perhaps in an effort to boost Levante sales, the Italian automaker is working on a GTS variant and a prototype was spied undergoing cold weather testing by CarPix. Though this has not been confirmed by Maserati, the test mule is said to house a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that was designed by Ferrari and capable of delivering 570 horsepower and 515 pound-feet of torque. Currently, said engine can be found in the Quattroporte GTS. We’re expecting it to be combined with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive system.

If Maserati could deliver on those performance numbers, then the Levante GTS could give the Porsche Cayenne Turbo a run for its money. Perhaps even the Bentayga V8, Cayenne Turbo, Range Rover Sport SVR, BMW X6 M, and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 with some tweaking, says CarScoops.

Not only will the engine be upgraded, so will certain exterior features. We’re expecting to see larger air vents to improve airflow, upgraded suspension, wheels, and new brakes.

Though no set reveal date has been released, we may see the Maserati Levante GTS debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March.

I like what Maserati is doing here but i think they should take it a step further and come out with a version of the Levante that is sort of like Jaguars Project 8 or the AMG GT-R if you know what I mean. If FCA doesn't do it with Maserati then they should at least try with Alfa Romeo.

No rumors and yes, reliable :)

The Trofeo will be extremely limited to around 30-40 cars only
