3 months/2500 miles in all driving modes - just yesterday the start/stop function spontaneously activated. Yes, one must drill down for the on/off (reverts back to on with each restart) - but I never touched it - it never engaged until now. I read somewhere that it does not engage in ICE mode, but that's not the case - only S and Man. Truly dislike the feature - anyone heard of a semi-perm off flash mod?

I think there is no permanent disable for S&S in the States and as far as I know, there's no flash for it either. It's such a pain... Did it come back after you deactivated it since that hapepned?
Yes, it does reactivate with each new start. It's just a little bothersome that it never worked until now and is not consistent when in Sport (not manual) mode - sometimes on, other times not. Another mod I would like is a permanent 'accept' of the Italian lawyer team's hold harmless agreement on the start up screen!
There's no current flash or mod to disable it. It's only disabled under sport/manual, as you noticed, and those are reset on ignition restart. Perhaps a software update may be forthcoming. I rarely drive out of sport mode and first encountered start/stop the other day on a short run. Not my favorite feature either. I've always felt like it's a gimmicky solution.
Perhaps it's glitchy right now and less likely to return in sport mode? Just a guess.
Stop & Start

Also if the AC is on it doesn't work. They want you to remain comfortable so they will not turn off your AC to save gas.

it isn't so much the A/C, it is the temperature setting selected and whether that can be maintained with the coolant not circulating and/or the a/c not operating for a moment. you can have the a/c on set to 70 and if it is 70 in the cabin it'll still start stop. it'll start back up sooner than taking your foot off the brake if the cabin temp rises.
the owners manual has a break down of atleast some of the start stop criteria.
